How It Works

Nourished Roots offers online nutrition counseling to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of location. Using a free platform called “Healthie” we will meet via a HIPPA-approved video-chat. You can also use this free site to keep track of your food intake and health measurements.

Initial Nutrition Consultations

Our first session together generally runs for an hour, and follow-ups are 45 minutes thereafter. During this time we’ll start off slowly; I like to get a good sense of a person’s current lifestyle, medical history, and goals. From there we’ll work together through nutrition interventions and health coaching at a pace that works for you, generally meeting once every two weeks. At the end of each consultation, we’ll establish clear and achievable goals, or action steps, for you to work on in between sessions. These goals help us track your progression and make healthy lifestyle changes seem natural.

Dive Deeper With Functional Nutrition

After laying this foundation, we’ll then dive deeper into some of the more complex health concerns you may have. This is where my integrative and functional training comes into play. Some examples of this are Nutrigenomics (the study of nutrition’s impact on gene expression), micronutrient testing (checking cell-level deficiencies in vitamins and minerals), and analysis of a person’s specific gut bacteria/yeast to understand digestive issues, immune system function, and even mental health. I work with each individual to figure out the appropriate testing and nutrition interventions. I believe in a “food first approach,” but might also recommend reputable nutrition supplements that assist in achieving optimal health.

Part of my work occurs “behind the scenes” as I connect with labs, evaluate lab test results prior to the consultation, write reports for the client, research, and prepare personalized strategies along the way. On the client-facing side, I’ll engage through scheduled consultations and follow-up emails and calls to guide and fine-tune the process.

Tip of the Day

Often times we read the label and aren’t sure what we are looking at or what numbers are “good.” The best way to read a label is to first look at the serving size, which tells us the amount we would need to eat to equal the rest of the nutrients on the label. It is important to be aware of the serving size listed, because they range from 1.5 ounces for a favorite cookie to one-tenth of a pound for raw kale. Next read the Percent Daily Value on the label’s right side. The percentages in that column tell you what percentage of the recommended daily nutrients you get after eating one serving size. For example, if a serving size of your favorite snack is a whopping one pretzel, and the percent daily value for sodium is 41%, then each pretzel you eat gives you 41% of the recommended daily intake for sodium. Two pretzels gives you 82%. Three pretzels gives you 123% and so on. A convenient way to look at percent daily values is to follow the 5-20 rule; 5% or less is considered low, while 20% or more is considered high.
